The tour is a demanding mountain trek. The levels of difficulty of the various routes are just nuances. The height of the summit always remains the same and should not be underestimated at almost 6,000m. The great advantage of this route is that we spend the whole time in well-developed huts. In the Horombo hut we sleep twice and take an excursion to the Zebra Rocks, which is very useful for our altitude adjustment. We offer you perfectly organized freely selectable and combinable module programs for your desired date. Character of the tour and requirements
Profile:
The Kilimanjaro ascent via the Marangu route is considered to be the easiest route to the highest mountain in Africa, but it should not be underestimated due to the walking times, especially on the summit day and due to the altitude. It is the only route on which you are continuously accommodated in huts. The route is the same in ascent and descent. The varied path leads through the various vegetation zones from the rainforest to the alpine desert. You will spend the night twice at the Horombo Hut, which is very beneficial for the altitude adjustment.
Requirement:
For the five to seven-hour daily stages to climb Kilimanjaro, you don’t need mountaineering skills so much as good physical condition and physical fitness. On the day of the summit you will be on your feet for over twelve hours, with 1,180 hm ascent and almost 2,200 hm in descent! The unusual height places additional demands on the body, which should not be underestimated. The heart and circulation must be healthy. Please consult your doctor before you start your journey. Walking slowly and steadily during the ascent is important, especially at the beginning when you are not yet acclimatized. Walking too quickly at this altitude can lead to altitude sickness and thus to interruption of the tour. We recommend doing endurance sports (jogging, cycling, Walking or swimming) and extensive hikes and mountain climbs to prepare for this trip. The last ascent to the Kibo crater in particular is very strenuous due to the altitude and requires a lot of stamina, as it is steep and leads over loose scree. Surefootedness is especially important on the summit day when hiking through stony terrain or scree. You walk on wide paths or good paths.
Height:
Due to staying at altitudes above 2,500 m, there is the possibility of altitude sickness (AMS). Symptoms range from headache and dizziness to threatening brain or pulmonary edema. In order to reduce the risk, the itinerary is designed in such a way that at the beginning of the trip there is an opportunity to adapt and the body can get used to the changed circumstances. This includes slow and steady walking and drinking enough fluids. Nevertheless, it is still a burden for the body and we ask you to consult your family doctor before departure. In addition, Hypoxicum, the institute for altitude training in Munich, offers the opportunity to prepare carefully and precisely for the stay at altitude. The altitude tolerance test offered there provides information about
Accommodation:
On the Marangu route you will be accommodated in multi-bed camps in simple mountain huts. Before and after the climb in a mid-range hotel in Moshi
Catering:
On the trekking days there is an invigorating breakfast (egg, pancakes, fruits, muesli, and sausage at the beginning). At lunchtime there is usually a rich packed lunch with a sandwich, boiled egg, samosa, biscuit and fruit. In the evening there is a starter soup, then often meat and vegetables with pasta or rice. If you want, you can also try the East African maize porridge ugali, which your escort team prepares for you. Please understand, however, that the food is not overly varied, as all catering must be borne. Drinking water is boiled and filled hot in the bottles or bladders you have brought with you in the morning and in the evening, sometimes also at noon (please bring a capacity of at least 3 liters per person). The boiled water can be drunk without hesitation, no additional water disinfection tablets are necessary. A rich breakfast buffet and dinner are available at the hotel in Moshi. Apart from climbing the mountain, you get drinking water in sealed water bottles (make sure that the seal or the cap is unopened). In the interests of your health, please brush your teeth with the drinking water.
Karibuni! Welcome to Tanzania! We arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, we are picked up and drive to the hotel in Moshi. In the afternoon we will be briefed for the upcoming Kilimanjaro ascent and have time to repack our mountain luggage, or we have already packed the mountain luggage in a small separate bag at home. A maximum of 12 kg per person including a mat (if you wish) and sleeping bag are transported by the porters. To protect the porters, this is checked by the national park authority. We can leave the rest of the luggage locked at the agency on site.
After breakfast we drive to Marangu Gate (1,860 m). Here we meet our escort team, introduce ourselves to each other, do the national park registration and set off. The first stage takes about 4 hours through the dense rainforest. Rainfalls can occur – quite typical for this region and the tropical rainforest. The canopy of leaves is dense and green, lichens hang down from the trees, the plants grow much larger here than we know from Europe. The path climbs slightly. Perhaps we will see colobus monkeys jumping back and forth in the treetops. The Mandara huts (2,720 m), our destination for the day, are located in a clearing. If you want, you can take a trip to the nearby Maundi Crater in the afternoon.
The vegetation gradually becomes bushier and lower as we gain altitude. After a short time we reach the transition from the rain forest to the so-called “moorlands”, the high moor. We pass the famous Kilimanjaro Senecia and see the mighty summit structure of the Kibo for the first time, if the weather permits. Today’s stage is a little longer than yesterday. A small picnic area by the side of the path invites you to take a lunch break; it is called “Kimangi Marangu” and used to be an important place for the “rain makers”. Continuing uphill, we will probably reach the Horombo hut (3,720 m) in the early afternoon. After a short break, we should do an acclimatization hike, which is beneficial for our altitude adjustment and allows us to sleep better.
Today is for acclimatization! We hike towards Mawenzi. Soon after the Horombo hut, we turn right and leave the lush vegetation behind. We pass the Zebra Rock, a rock with striking stripes (4,200 m). Here we decide whether we should continue to the Mawenzi hut (4,350 m) or unpack our lunch here and then go back to the Horombo hut.
Multi-bed hut (F, M, A)
The landscape changes in the transition from the high moor to the alpine desert. Only heather and everlasting flowers grow here, later only lichens. After a few hours we have reached the Kibo saddle and hike gently uphill until we reach the Kibo huts in the early afternoon. We rest and can take a look at the summit stage, which can be seen from the Kibo huts. After an invigorating dinner, we crawl into our sleeping bags early so that we can master tomorrow’s summit day as rested as possible.
We start between midnight and 1 a.m. The path initially leads relatively flat over scree and stones, later it becomes steeper in bends through lava sand and scree. We run slowly and evenly. Our companions admonish us: “Pole Pole!” (Swahili: Slowly!). At the longed-for sunrise we are at Gilman’s Point (5,681 m). Those who still have strength can continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) in about 2 hours. After the summit photo and a sip of hot tea, we descend again. The descent is much faster than the seemingly endless ascent. Now we can literally jump down in the soft lava sand until we reach the Kibo hut, where we can rest a little and have a warm meal before we go back down along the Kibo saddle to the Horombo hut (3,720 m),
We hike down through the high moor and the rainforest. We take a short break at the Mandara huts before we descend the last few meters. The lush, diverse vegetation makes the last descent a little more entertaining. Finally we reach the Marangu Gate (1,860 m). Here we say goodbye to our escort team, get into the car and drive to the hotel in Moshi. Finally a warm shower again!
Depending on the departure time, we have the day at our disposal until we are picked up at the airport. We have to vacate the rooms around 10 a.m. Those who stay longer can deposit their luggage at reception.
Anyone who has booked an extension begins the program today. Either the safari starts after breakfast or the plane to Zanzibar.
