Interesting mountain ascent through all vegetation zones and at the same time ideal acclimatization for Kilimanjaro
The ascent of Mount Meru with its 4,565 m height is a varied trek to the fifth highest mountain in Africa. The vegetation zones are similar to those on Kilimanjaro. At the beginning it goes through the dense rainforest of the Arusha National Park. Due to the many animals that are native here, the ascent, especially in the lower area, has a slight walking safari character. It is not uncommon to meet giraffes, water buffalo and zebras. A group of monkeys swing screaming on lianas through the treetops. A ranger from the national park authority takes care of our safety and accompanies us. In the upper third of the ascent, steep rocky passages await us where you have to use your hands and require surefootedness. Mount Meru offers good height adjustment for a subsequent ascent of Kilimanjaro. But even in itself, Mount Meru is an absolutely worthwhile mountain climb through flora and fauna of the various vegetation zones. In addition, the mountain is far less frequented than its big brother in the neighborhood. The view early in the morning from Socialist Peak over to Kilimanjaro and east into the vast plains of the savannah will not be forgotten!

Karibuni! Welcome to Tanzania! We arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, are picked up and drive to the hotel in Moshi. In the afternoon we are briefed for the upcoming Mount Meru ascent and have time to repack our mountain luggage, or we have already packed the mountain luggage in a small separate bag at home. A maximum of 10 kg per person including the sleeping bag are transported by the porters. To protect the porters, this is checked by the national park authority. We can leave the rest of the luggage locked at the agency on site.
After breakfast we drive to Momella Gate (1,580 m), the starting point of the Mount Meru ascent. Here we meet the team who will accompany us during the trek. It is quite possible that we will meet giraffes, elephants and buffalo in the open grassland at the foot of the mountain. After about 3 to 4 hours we reach our destination for the day, the simple but spacious Miriakamba hut (approx. 2,514 m). The team ensures a hearty dinner.
From the Miriakamba hut the path leads through dense forest with mosses and beard lichens – an area called Topela Mbogo (buffalo swamps) – to the Mgongo wa Tembo (elephant back) viewpoint at about 3,200 m, about 2 to 3 hours away. From there we have a wonderful view of the large, blasted crater. With a little luck we can also see the nimble klipspringer antelopes here, which like to hang out in this alpine vegetation belt made of giant heather bushes. We walk another 1-2 hours to the 3,566 m high Saddle Hut. After a short break, we should go on an acclimatization hike to the 3,801 m high summit of Little Meru (an additional 235 m ↑ ↓, approx. 1 hour walking time). Especially in the late afternoon,
We leave the Saddle Hut early in the morning after midnight. The last 1,000 meters to the 4,565 m high Socialist Peak are steep and exhausting. But the view from the summit is fabulous and the moment unforgettable when the sun rises behind the Kili massif and the wide plain in between slowly begins to glow orange-red. We enjoy these intense moments and gradually get ready for the descent. On the already known path, we go down to the Miriakamba hut (2,514 m), where we spend the night.
We comfortably descend to Momella Gate (1,580 m) and say goodbye to our escort team. Afterwards we drive to our hotel in Moshi.
Depending on the departure time, we have the day at our disposal until we are picked up to the airport. We have to vacate the rooms around 10 a.m. Those who stay longer can deposit their luggage at reception.
Anyone who has booked a Kilimanjaro ascent can use today to relax. In the afternoon the briefing for the Kilimanjaro ascent takes place, which usually begins on the following day.
